Answer key — Math Kangaroo practice
Each wrong choice carries the thinking that produces it. When a student picks C, this is what they were doing.
1.D — ThursdayKA-0021Remainders and modular cycles
AI found the remainder 2 but counted the two days starting from today rather than starting from tomorrow.
BI divided 100 by 7 and used the quotient of 14, treating the leftover days as if there were none.
CI remembered there was a remainder but used a remainder of 1 instead of working it out.
EI counted 100 divided by 7 as 14 remainder 3 instead of remainder 2.
2.A — 2 hoursKA-0162Rate, time, distance
BI used only the slower car's speed and divided 300 by 90 the wrong way round.
CI averaged the two speeds to 75 km/h and divided 300 by it, which ignores that both cars move at once.
DI divided 300 by 60, using only the slower car.
EI halved the distance to 150 and then divided by 150, applying the closing speed twice.
3.C — 16KA-0019Multi-step arithmetic word problems
AI found what one child has left and gave that instead of the total for all four.
BI divided 24 by 4 and then subtracted 2 twice, mixing up per-child steps with total steps.
DI subtracted 2 pencils once from the whole pack instead of once from each of the four children.
EI subtracted the 2 before sharing, so only one lot of 2 ever came out of the total.
4.C — 12KA-0062Factors, multiples, LCM and GCD by listing
AI found a number that divides both but not the largest one, stopping at the first that worked.
BI used the difference between 36 and 24 divided by 2 rather than a common factor.
DI used a factor of 36 without checking that it also divides 24.
EI found the least common multiple instead of the greatest common divisor.
5.B — Bo onlyKA-0096Truth-tellers and liars
AI took Ana's statement at face value without checking whether a truthful person could say it.
CI decided nobody was lying without testing Ana's statement against that assumption.
DI believed Ana's statement even after concluding she was a liar, which is what a liar's statement cannot be.
EI gave up when Ana's statement looked circular, instead of testing one assumption all the way through.
6.B — 8KA-0100Working backwards
AI undid the operations in the order they were written instead of in reverse order.
CI gave the final answer back, assuming the three steps cancelled each other out.
DI doubled the 11 and subtracted the 6 but forgot the final halving that undoes the doubling.
EI undid only the halving and stopped there without touching the other two steps.
7.B — 21.5KA-0115Multi-step arithmetic word problems
AI halved the 60 pencils before giving any away.
CI subtracted 17 from one box of 12 rather than from the whole 60.
DI gave the number of pencils left over rather than what each child gets.
EI gave the starting number of pencils without doing either of the steps.
8.C — 8KA-0147Circles: radius, diameter, and touching circles
AI subtracted the radii, which is the answer when one circle sits inside the other.
BI averaged the two radii instead of adding them.
DI multiplied the radii together rather than adding them.
EI added the two diameters instead of the two radii.
9.A — 6KA-0173Counting up to symmetry
BI counted every colouring of the four edges and forgot that rotations make some of them identical.
CI divided 16 by 4, but that only works when no painting is left unchanged by a rotation, and some are.
DI halved 16, treating only the 180 degree turn as a symmetry.
EI listed by how many edges are black but forgot that two black edges can be adjacent or opposite.
10.C — 25KA-0135Digit-constraint puzzles
AI counted the odd numbers in one row of ten and treated that as the whole answer.
BI used four odd digits instead of five, forgetting that 9 is odd.
DI counted every two-digit number that is itself odd, which only fixes the last digit.
EI let the first digit be any of ten values rather than only the five odd ones.
